Coconuts have been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest known mentions of the coconut is from the “1001 nights” story of Sinbad the Sailor. Sinbad is depicted buying and selling coconuts during his fifth voyage. It is widely accepted that the first people to bring coconuts back to Europe were Portuguese or Spanish sailors. Freshly sliced coconuts were said to remind the sailors of a native Portuguese ghost which was named "Coconut"
